Masculinity vs. Feminity

Society has made much progress compared to where we regarding gender roles and stereotypes a couple decades ago. However, there is still a long way to go.  Although breaking gender norms and getting rid of masculine and feminine stereotypes has been introduced, most people unknowingly continue to generalize things into the two categories. Gender roles are things people are introduced and placed into whether they realize it or not. When we watched The Mask You Live In during class, parents painting the nursery blue or pink itself begins the categorization of genders. If simple things like colors stereotype genders, then how can kids be raised in a gender-neutral environment? Gender roles can be seen in toys for kids, movies, songs, and many other seemingly harmless things. This problem doesn't seem to have and possible and reasonable solution. The effects of this can be seen in the current generation who have been brought in conflicting views. Most of the generation before us actively participates in gender roles and does not find a problem with them. However, our generation is quick to point out flaws in such viewpoints. As a result, boys are told they shouldn't cry by parents but that they can by friends and girls are told to stay at home by parents but encouraged to go out by friends. This clash in viewpoints leaves a confused generation that isn't able to properly express themselves and has to hide various parts of themselves in front of various groups of people.

  1. Very insightful! I think that this may be the generation to have conflicting views as we are in the process of transitioning from one mindset to another, but once we are through with this transition we can have a happier future.

  2. I like how you incorporated specific examples of masculinity and femininity to help your argument. Also, I like that you are comparing previous generations to the current one; the mindsets are definitely different

  3. I like some of the things you pointed about our generation in the context of the previous one. I don't think these are unique problems, though. Every generation has faced a struggle to progress past the previous one, and all we can do is try to push past these obstacles, and make sure we don 't become the obstacles for people in the future who we may have a hard time understanding. While I don't think the color associations are very harmful, I agree it does represent the persistent existence of gender stereotypes in our culture. Blue being a bold, dark color that takes up lots of space (the sky, water) while pink is a color fundamentally associated with beauty (sunsets, flowers), while the favorite color of both genders is blue.
