Recently, it's been discovered that creativity has been declining since the 1990s and is continuing to decline. Using the Torrance Tests of Creative Thinking, researcher Dr. Kyung Hee Kim has found that the steady increase in creativity suddenly took a turn for the worse and began its downward descent. Creativity is the reason countries have advanced have moved on from agriculture to industry. All the technological advancements we enjoy today would not be possible if someone has not tried to come up with a unique solution using original thoughts and ideas. This inventiveness is what propels us into the future. Something as vital as creativity is a necessity and a decline in this cannot be disregarded. The most popular solution is to include creativity development as a class in schools. Pros for this approach is that students will be placed in an environment that requires problem-solving, which is where creativity often comes from. However, teachers argue that having creativity as a mandatory class would make it harder for teachers given current curriculum standards. Overall, the problem may be that creativity is being considered a separate element that is not already incorporated into many classes. Most math and science require such problem-solving skills which are also a form of creativity. Rather than dedicate a class period to creativity, teachers should encourage problem-solving and critical thinking within current classes instead of teaching students out of textbooks. A misconception about creativity is that it is limited to arts, which is not true. Creativity is anything that involved original thoughts ideas, whether it be for painting, biology, or algebra.
