My Thoughts on Huck Finn

For the past two weeks, we have been reading a book called The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain. It's a controversial book about a young white boy and a runaway slave that travel up and down a river. Both of them are running from the same society but for different, Huck runs away from class and Jim runs away from race. Huck runs into a massive amount of money and is forced into the life of the rich. He feels out of place and uncomfortable with the lifestyle and desperately wants a way out. Jim is soon to be auctioned off to another plantation and desperately wants to abandon his life as a slave to find his wife and children. Along the way, their paths cross and the give each other company as their run into various people and places. On the way, both of them are exposed to new worlds. Huck learns how similar black people are to his race and maybe society is wrong about African Americans. As Huck and Jim encounter hardships, they rely more and more on each other. Huck realizes that he doesn't want to conform to society and turn Jim in and decides to give him the greatest gift he can give to a slave, freedom. Personally, I enjoyed watching Huck grow and mature. Although he has miles to go, his ability to go against the dominant culture at the time to help a slave he just met shows that his journey of growth and maturing is not yet over.

  1. I really liked this abbreviation on both the plot and the deeper thematic ideas.
