Control Over the American Dream

Recently I watched a video about a family's house that had been destroyed by Hurricane Michael two days after they had bought it. This family had worked for seven years in their family business to be able to afford this house. The American Dream they had worked so hard for had been destroyed by a force beyond their control. This made me really question who achieves the American Dream and if it's really something completely within human control. Most people point to hard work and honest effort when asked the secret behind the American Dream. However, this family did just that and more but their Dream was taken away from them within minutes. There are always instances were individuals work hard and do everything to move towards their American Dream, and there are always instances where individuals do this and are left with less than what they had before.

Besides natural disasters, some people aren't able to achieve their dream despite their efforts or aren't given the opportunity to even envision their American Dream. For decades, two things have become a deciding factor in whether a person is able to live their Ameican Dream. One is money and the other is education. While equal access to education is a work in progress, the issue of money remains unsolved. But this is a problem usually found in developed countries where having an education and money is somewhat possible. In developing countries, many people remain unexposed to the possibilities of what they could do. For them, life will always remain as it always has been, stagnant and unchanging. But what if they were given the ability to dream? Would they rise above their current standing and become something greater? All these questions will most likely remain unanswered until the underprivileged people around the world are allowed to explore their future and choose a path to their definition of success.

  1. Great job with this! The example of the house being destroyed by the hurricane is very tragic. I wonder if they even have the money or resources to rebuild their American Dream. I especially agreed with your clam that you need money and education to achieve the American dream. Unfortunately, those without it are usually left to struggle in society.

  2. I like how instead of just stating what the dream simply is and what it has done for people, you decided to questioned if its possible for people to achieve at all because of some situations that come along the way destructing their dream. This same situation was portrayed in one article that I read in class where a man was an immigrant in America and he went above and beyond to achieve his dream but some of his actions contained consequences and his dream was crushed. So just like the tornado, difficulties can come along the way crushing a persons dream like you said.
